A Budget Planning Guide for Family Holidays
Holidaying with children presents a different challenge in terms of both budget and planning. While some tactics calculated for a single traveller or a couple don't work for a family of four, there are also special advantages and discounts for families. How can you have a family holiday on a realistic budget without lowering the quality?
Transport: Are 4 Tickets = 4 Times the Cost?
Flight prices are the biggest cost item on a family holiday. On most airlines, children under 2 can fly without a seat for a very low fee (about 10% of the ticket price) โ hard on long flights, but a big cost advantage. For children aged 2โ12, some airlines charge 75% of the adult fare or less; worth checking.
On a family holiday, travelling by car (short distances) or a charter-flight package holiday can come well below the sum of individual tickets. For domestic family holidays in Turkey, a combination of high-speed train or bus + a rental car is sometimes far more economical than flying.
Accommodation: Family Rooms and Aparthotels
Instead of 2 separate standard rooms, renting 1 family room or a self-catering apartment is usually better in terms of both cost and comfort. Aparthotels or holiday villages significantly reduce daily food costs with kitchen access โ even breakfast can run โฌ30โ50 for 4 people if eaten out.
On Airbnb and similar platforms, 2โ3 bedroom apartments are usually 20โ40% cheaper than a family room in the same area, and much more spacious. Private space for children, a kitchen and a washing machine are also practical advantages of this option.
Activities and Food Budget
There are significant discounts for children at museums and activities โ the vast majority of European museums charge no fee for visitors under 12 or 18. City pass cards (Paris Museum Pass, Prague Card, etc.) seriously optimise a family budget for an intensive museum programme; calculate in advance.
Food spending can easily get out of control on a family holiday. Solving lunches with grocery shopping or street food, and preparing one meal a day in the kitchen, can save โฌ200โ400 a week on a 4-person holiday. Shopping at the destination's local markets is both economical and a cultural experience.
Realistic Budget Examples
A 7-day European holiday for a family of four (2 adults + 2 children): flights โฌ800โ1,400, accommodation (aparthotel) โฌ700โ1,200, food โฌ400โ700, activities โฌ200โ400, transport/other โฌ150โ300. A total of โฌ2,250โ4,000 is a realistic estimate. In the Balkans or Central Europe these figures can drop 30โ40%, to the โฌ1,500โ2,500 level.
For a domestic family holiday in Turkey (the Aegean or Mediterranean, an all-inclusive holiday village), 7 days for 4 people ranges from 15,000โ40,000 TL โ varying widely by accommodation quality and season. Early booking is the most effective saving method in this segment.
