Holidays Outside Peak Season: The Cheapest Periods

High-season prices are sometimes 2–3 times those of the low season; the same hotel, the same room, the same view — only the calendar is different. Knowing where to go at which time of year is equivalent to doubling your holiday budget. Every popular destination has its 'cheapest but not worst' time — here's a destination-by-destination guide.

The Mediterranean and the Aegean: May–June and September–October

At Mediterranean destinations such as Greece, Italy, Spain and Turkey, the high season is July–August. In this period both flight tickets and hotel prices peak, and crowds reach their maximum. May–June and September–October are the 'shoulder season'; the weather is still suitable for swimming (September is perfect in the Aegean), prices are 20–40% lower, and crowds are noticeably thinner.

April is becoming increasingly warm even for Greece and Cyprus — although swimming may not be possible, it's ideal for sightseeing, walking and culture tours, and prices can drop to even half of summer's.

European Cities: November–February (Except December)

For city destinations such as Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Prague, the winter months are the peak of cheapness — except December and Christmas. In November and the January–February period, prices fall 30–50% below summer's. Museums are empty, no waiting at restaurants, photos without crowds.

Destinations suited to winter tourism: Central and Eastern European cities such as Prague, Budapest, Warsaw and Riga are quite beautiful even in winter; during the Christmas-market period they take on a special charm. It's enough to avoid only the price-peak period of 26 December–1 January.

The Far East: November–March Climate and Periods to Avoid

For Thailand and Bali, November–April is the dry season and the most beautiful period; May–October monsoon rains complicate everything. Vietnam's climate varies by region — for northern Vietnam October–April is ideal, for the south November–April.

Japan's cherry-blossom season (late March–April) is both the most beautiful and the most expensive period. For budget, choose May or October–November — the autumn leaves (kōyō) are also visually magnificent but far less crowded.

Tip: Avoiding Public Holidays and Festivals

In Turkey, domestic holiday prices can rise 100–300% during Eid al-Adha and Ramadan Eid — routes like Istanbul–Antalya in particular become impossible to book. Paradoxically, going abroad during these periods can be far more economical.

The destination country's own national holidays also matter: bank-holiday weekends in the UK, the August holiday in France, and the Semana Santa (Easter) period in Spain all push prices up sharply. Before booking, check the national-holiday calendar of the country you're visiting.
