10 Weekend Getaways from Istanbul

There are dozens of destinations within 1–3 hours' drive of Istanbul where you can breathe without straining your budget. For a weekend there's no need for a flight or long planning — just choosing the right place and the right time is enough. Here are the 10 most accessible weekend-getaway spots from Istanbul.

1. Lake Abant — A Nature Getaway

Lake Abant in Bolu, reachable from Istanbul with a roughly 2.5–3 hour journey, is one of Turkey's most beautiful lake landscapes. With a walking trail around the lake (about 8 km), forested areas and a calm atmosphere out of season, it's enchanting even between January and March. The hotels within Abant Nature Park can be preferred for accommodation.

2. Sapanca and Adapazarı — Lake and Gastronomy

Lake Sapanca is one of the largest nature destinations closest to Istanbul; about 1.5–2 hours. The small cafés by the lake, natural walking areas and the region's restaurants are ideal for a day or overnight weekend getaway. Adapazarı's milk pudding and ıslama köfte are stars of the regional gastronomy.

3. Şile and Ağva — The Black Sea Coast

Istanbul's nearest seaside, Şile, is about 70 km from the city centre. With its natural beach, historic lighthouse and small fishing restaurants, it's a simple but pleasant getaway. Ağva is a little further (about 90 km) but offers a completely different vibe with the view of the point where the Yeşilçay and Göksu rivers meet the sea.

4. Edirne — History and Culture

Reachable from Istanbul in about 2.5–3 hours, Edirne is a history-tour destination in its own right with the Selimiye Mosque and Old Mosque from its time as an Ottoman capital. Fried liver (tava ciğeri) and Edirne cheese are essentials of the regional cuisine. Edirne's historic bazaars keep the Ottoman trading tradition alive without being as touristy as the Grand Bazaar.

5-10: Other Nearby Getaway Spots

Tekirdağ: A pleasant 1.5–2 hour route for the Marmara coast, Tekirdağ meatballs and visiting the region's wine producers. A different experience especially during the grape harvest in autumn.

Bursa: Despite its historical weight, Bursa often doesn't make weekend-getaway lists, yet it's satisfying with Uludağ (winter) and the village of Cumalıkızık (year-round). The İskender kebab eaten in Bursa is noticeably different from its Istanbul versions.

Princes' Islands (Adalar): Within Istanbul but a completely different atmosphere — 50–90 minutes by ferry. Spending the day cycling on Büyükada with a rented bike is the most practical and economical form of city escape. Heybeliada is quieter and less touristy.

Polonezköy: This village of Polish origin in Istanbul's Beykoz district is among the green lungs of the city. A day trip for forest walks and small farm restaurants.

Kıyıköy (Vize): A small, quiet cove opening onto the Black Sea in Thrace; about 2 hours from Istanbul. It has begun to gain value with its clean sea, not overly crowded in summer, and its fish restaurants.

Yalova and Termal: 1–1.5 hours by ferry or over the bridge; the Yalova Termal hot springs are especially attractive in winter. There are options to suit every budget, from in-hotel spas to public facilities you can visit for the day.
