How to Pass the Time During Long Airport Waits?

Due to a long connection or a delayed flight, you may have to wait 4–12 hours at an airport. With the right preparation and a few practical tips, it's possible to turn this time into comfort. From lounges to sleep pods, from free Wi-Fi to free city tours, the hidden facilities of airports are in this guide.

Lounge Access: Only for Business Class?

Airport lounges are no longer the privilege of business-class passengers alone. Anyone with a Priority Pass, LoungeKey or LoungeBuddy membership can enter via credit-card perks (many premium Turkish bank cards offer Priority Pass), a daily visitor fee ($25–50) or airline miles.

Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles Elite/Elite Plus members and Star Alliance Gold members enter the THY CIP Lounge free. The Istanbul Airport CIP Lounge is one of Europe's best lounges; it has showers, food, a bar and a work area. Not using this facility on a long connection is a big loss.

Free Wi-Fi and Work Areas

Almost all large airports offer free Wi-Fi; however, speed and coverage vary. Istanbul IST, Singapore Changi, Amsterdam Schiphol and Dubai DXB are counted among the airports with the best free Wi-Fi. Registration with a phone number or email is usually enough.

Finding a power outlet is the critical point of a long wait. At large airports there are charging stations scattered through the waiting areas; in lounges there's an outlet at every seat. Carrying your own multi-plug adapter is a lifesaver.

Sleep Pods and Rest Areas

For overnight waits or long connections, sleep pods (capsule sleeping areas) are available at some large airports. Changi Airport retains the title of the world's most comfortable airport with its free recliner seats, a live-music area and a 24-hour cinema. Dubai DXB, Frankfurt and Heathrow have paid sleep pods.

Your own kit: a neck pillow, earplugs and an eye mask are the 3 most valuable items for a long wait. To lie down in the waiting area, scout a corner seat or a less crowded terminal — studying the airport map in advance saves time.

Free City Tours and Stepping Outside

Some countries offer those on long connections a free or visa-exempt short city tour. Singapore: a 'Free Singapore Tour' for connections exceeding 5.5 hours. Dubai: a free city tour on connections longer than 8 hours. Japan: special tour programmes for transit passengers at Narita or Haneda.

Turkey also has a similar scheme; under Turkish Airlines' connection programme an Istanbul tour can be provided. Researching and planning these opportunities before your flight turns the wait into an unexpected city discovery.
