How to Get from Istanbul Airport to the City?
Istanbul Airport (IST) is one of Europe's largest airports, and its distance from the city centre calls for transfer planning. Located about 35–50 km from Taksim, the airport can be reached by several options including the metro, the Havaş bus, a taxi and private transfer. We've compared the advantages and disadvantages of each option in this guide.
Metro (the M11 Line) — The Cheapest and Most Predictable Option
The M11 metro line, running directly from Istanbul Airport to Gayrettepe, opened in 2023. From Gayrettepe, transferring to the M2 line, it's possible to connect to Taksim, Şişhane, Vezneciler (for Eminönü) and Yenikapı. From the airport to Gayrettepe is about 35–38 minutes, and to Taksim about 45–50 minutes in total.
The metro fare with an İstanbulkart is about 25–35 TL (2026 tariff). The İstanbulkart can be bought from machines inside the airport. Since the metro doesn't run between 00:00 and 06:00, you'll need to use alternative options at those times. For travel with luggage the wide carriage doors are comfortable — boarding at the first stop is an advantage for finding space at peak times.
The Havaş Bus — Comfortable with a Fixed Route
Havaş runs regular services from Istanbul Airport to Taksim, Mecidiyeköy, Esenler bus terminal and Kadıköy. The Taksim route is about 45–75 minutes; this can lengthen during heavy traffic. Seat comfort is better than the metro, and there's under-bus storage for large suitcases.
The Havaş ticket price is in the 60–90 TL band (2026). It can be preferred especially when you're going to different parts of the city and want a more direct route than the metro. Tickets can be bought via the app or at the airport counter.
Taxi — Fast but Expensive
By yellow taxi, the airport to Taksim is about 400–600 TL; it varies with traffic. With no night or heavy traffic, it takes about 40–50 minutes. To guard against the meter manipulation or long-route problem often encountered in tourism, a taxi hailed via the Uber or BiTaksi apps is safer — the price is known in advance.
A taxi takes you door to door directly; it's advantageous over other options for late hours, extra luggage or group travel. For a group of 3–4, a taxi is sometimes more economical than the total cost of tickets.
Private Transfer — For Groups and First-Time Visitors
Airport private transfer services (a car with a driver) are usually between 500–900 TL. Booked in advance; the driver greets you with your name, helps with luggage and takes you directly to your address. If you're coming to Istanbul for the first time or travelling with your family, it's a good option for a stress-free start.
Bookings can be made in advance through travel platforms such as viaviq or airport-linked transfer apps. As the number of people rises, the per-person cost falls; for a family of 4+, a minibus transfer can be the best balance of price and comfort.
Comparison Summary
Metro: ~25–35 TL, ~45–50 min, no night service. Havaş: ~60–90 TL, ~50–75 min, comfortable. Taxi: ~400–600 TL, ~40–55 min, suitable for groups. Private transfer: ~500–900 TL, ~40–55 min, door to door.
Recommendation: if budget is the priority, the metro + M2 combination. If your location isn't Taksim, Havaş. For travel as a group or with lots of luggage, a taxi or private transfer. On night flights (00:00–06:00) there's no metro; a taxi or transfer is essential.
