Where to Stay in London? A Hotel Guide by Area
London is a city where, given its size and diversity, the choice of accommodation area really makes a difference. Staying near Oxford Street and staying in Shoreditch offer completely different experiences in the same city โ and the price difference is serious. We help you choose the right area based on your budget, itinerary and preferred atmosphere.
Central London (Westminster, Mayfair, Covent Garden)
Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the National Gallery and the West End theatres are within walking distance โ but this central location has its price: the ยฃ200โ500 a night band is standard. On a very short trip or for those who want to see everything on foot, the centre makes sense; but the London Underground is so good that it's possible to reach all corners of the city in 20โ30 minutes.
Covent Garden is a good option if shopping and the theatre programme are intensive. Mayfair, meanwhile, is the preferred address for luxury accommodation; boutique hotels with Hyde Park views and 5-star chains are in this area.
Shoreditch and East London โ Creative and Affordable
Radically transformed over the last 10 years, Shoreditch is London's creative, digital and young soul. With street art, independent restaurants, vintage markets and a lively bar scene, it's a very different atmosphere from Central London. Prices are 20โ40% lower than the centre; finding options in the ยฃ80โ200 a night band is easier.
Transport: 15โ20 minutes to the centre via the Central line and Overground. Especially for visitors under 30, the art/tech sector or those seeking a local experience, Shoreditch is definitely worthwhile.
Southwark and London Bridge โ The Thames South Bank
Tate Modern, Borough Market, Shakespeare's Globe and The Shard are all on the south bank of the Thames. This area has become one of London's most developed and most sensible accommodation spots over the last 15 years. With the Jubilee Line, Mayfair is reachable in 10 minutes and Canary Wharf in 15.
Price range ยฃ90โ250 a night; Thames-view hotels are a little premium. For those who want to build a morning-walk routine, Borough Market is unmatched โ one of the world's best food markets right on your doorstep.
Far but Well-Connected Areas for Budget
Stratford (around the Olympic Park): developed since the 2012 Olympics; 20โ25 minutes to the centre by Underground but prices 40โ50% lower. Canary Wharf: ideal for business travel, a little far for museum or tourist focus. Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush: in West London, very close to Heathrow; perfect for a short connection stay.
Airbnb and aparthotel options are far more competitive outside Central London. Especially on a family holiday, an Airbnb apartment in Zone 2โ3 areas offers much more space for the whole family at half the price of a central hotel room.
