A Guide to Reaching the City from Sabiha Gökçen
Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) is on Istanbul's Anatolian side, in the Pendik district. Located about 50–60 km from Taksim, crossing from the airport to the European side involves bridge traffic, so the choice of time and route is critical. Making the right choice saves both time and money.
The Havaş Bus — The Most Common Option
Havaş runs regular services from Sabiha Gökçen to Taksim. The standard time is 1.5–2 hours; during morning and evening bridge-traffic hours this can stretch to 2.5–3 hours. A ticket is about 70–100 TL. Besides Taksim, the Kadıköy route (on the Anatolian side, 30–40 min) and the Bostancı route are also available.
Havaş is a good option especially for Taksim and its surroundings. It runs at frequent intervals from 06:00 in the morning to late at night. Tickets can be booked online or bought at the counter inside the airport.
The Metro + Marmaray Combination
To reach the M4 metro line from Sabiha Gökçen, you first need to get to Pendik by shuttle or taxi (about 10–15 min, 50–80 TL). From Pendik, the M4 takes you to Ayrılıkçeşmesi, and then the Marmaray connects to Sirkeci or Kazlıçeşme. Total time is about 70–90 minutes.
Since this combination works independently of traffic, it's a strong alternative to Havaş at peak hours. The cost is low (about 30–40 TL with an İstanbulkart); but it requires extra planning for the transfers and for getting to Pendik.
The Ferry Option — From Kadıköy or Bostancı
If your destination is the coastal districts of the European side (Karaköy, Eminönü, Beşiktaş), a ferry + minibus combination is both economical and enjoyable. You get to Bostancı from the airport by shuttle or taxi (20–30 min), then make the Bosphorus crossing by ferry from Bostancı to Kabataş or Eminönü. The Bosphorus view is a bonus.
For ferry schedules, check the İDO or Şehir Hatları timetable; there are no services late at night. For daytime arrivals in good weather, this is the most pleasant transfer option.
Taxi and Private Transfer
By taxi, Sabiha Gökçen to Taksim is 500–800 TL; very dependent on traffic. Especially between 17:00–20:00, time and cost rise due to bridge traffic. Vehicles hailed via Uber/BiTaksi provide price certainty.
For those living or staying on the Anatolian side, Sabiha Gökçen's advantage is great; Kadıköy, Üsküdar or Maltepe can be reached in 20–40 minutes. Choosing which airport to fly into based on which side of Istanbul you're going to can save more than the ticket price difference.
