Do I Need Travel Insurance? A Comprehensive Guide

Travel insurance is a financial safeguard many people skip but that pays back its value many times over when needed. Being hospitalised abroad, a flight cancellation, lost luggage or a holiday cancelled due to a natural disaster โ€” being uninsured in any of these situations can mean a serious financial burden.

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?

Basic cover: emergency medical treatment and hospital costs (the most critical item abroad), medical evacuation (an ambulance flight, transfer to a nearby country), flight cancellation/delay compensation, lost or delayed luggage, trip cancellation (due to illness, accident or natural disaster).

Extended cover: adventure sports (skiing, diving, trekking โ€” mostly excluded from standard policies), rental-car damage, legal assistance during travel, quarantine costs due to COVID-19. When buying a policy, choose cover according to your activity plans.

When Mandatory, When Optional?

Situations where it's mandatory: travel health insurance is a legal requirement for a Schengen visa application (a minimum of โ‚ฌ30,000 medical cover). Countries where healthcare costs are very high, such as the US, Canada and Australia โ€” an uninsured hospital visit can cost thousands of dollars.

Situations where it's recommended: long holidays (1+ week), family holidays, trips involving adventure sports, cruise holidays (strict cancellation policies), and travellers with health conditions. On short trips to neighbouring countries the risk is low, but medical costs can arise anywhere.

Prices and Company Recommendations

Travel insurance prices from Turkey: 150โ€“400 TL per person for a 1-week Europe trip; 400โ€“800 TL for the US or distant destinations. Family policies are usually 20โ€“30% cheaper than the sum of individual policies. Annual multi-trip policies are far more economical for frequent travellers.

Popular travel insurance companies in Turkey: Axa, Allianz, Mapfre, HDI, Zurich. For comparison, you can use Sigorta Sepeti or the companies' own sites directly. Reading the cover is time-consuming, but always check the 'medical evacuation', 'flight cancellation' and 'pre-existing condition' clauses.

Exclusions to Watch Out For

Pre-existing conditions: most standard policies don't cover chronic conditions known before the trip. Special cover can be added for those with a history of diabetes, heart disease or cancer.

Accidents under the influence of alcohol or at risk, war zones, professional sport and extremely risky activities are outside standard policies. For adventure tourism (bungee jumping, mountain climbing, diving) you need a special adventure-sports add-on. Putting the policy in your bag isn't enough โ€” record a digital copy on your phone, and note the emergency number to reach assistance.
