The Secrets of Finding Cheap Hotels on Holiday

One of the biggest items in a holiday budget is usually accommodation. Yet with the right platform choice, booking timing and a few practical tactics, it's possible to get the same level of comfort at a much lower price. Here are the most effective methods for optimising hotel prices.

Choose the Right Platform

Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com and Agoda offer different advantages in different regions. Booking.com generally offers a wider selection in Europe and the Middle East, while Agoda is far more competitive in Asian destinations. Comparing two platforms for the same hotel usually reveals a 10–20% difference.

Hotel chains' own booking sites also matter; large chains (Marriott, Hilton, IHG) may add free cancellation, points or extra services to bookings made on their own sites. Loyalty programmes also turn into serious savings over the long term.

Timing and Booking Tactics

In high season (July–August in Europe, December–January at ski destinations), early booking is essential; prices rise exponentially with occupancy. But in the shoulder season or at low-demand destinations, last-minute bookings sometimes offer 30–50% discounts — hotels drop prices to 'fill' unsold rooms.

Booking after midnight or in the early morning hours sometimes meets pricing algorithms with better results. In addition, always prefer the 'free cancellation' option — if the price drops, you can cancel and rebook.

Hidden Deals and Alternative Accommodation

The 'secret' or 'opaque' hotel options on Booking.com and Expedia offer a 30–40% discount without revealing the hotel's name. The hotel's area and star rating are known, but not the name. They usually give good results.

Also consider hostels and boutique hotels; especially for solo travel or couples, small boutique hotels can offer far more competitive prices than chains. Airbnb and similar platforms provide a serious advantage, especially on family holidays (kitchen access = food savings).

Points and Loyalty Systems

Hotels.com's 'Collect 10 nights, get 1 free' campaign is still valid for frequent bookers. Booking.com Genius membership offers perks such as discounts and free breakfast at certain hotels. To use these systems, simply make every booking through the same account.

Bank and credit-card points systems are also important in cutting the hotel bill. Some cards earn 2–3x points on certain travel platforms; using accumulated points to pay for the room reduces the cost considerably.
